Unique Features: This tree is also known as the Rocky Mountain Bristlecone growing mostly in Colorado and northern New Mexico. They grow at the tree line or sometimes in solid stands at lower altitudes. When growing at or above the tree line the can develop stunted and deformed shapes, krummholz, often simulated in Bonsai forms. The needles of this tree are held in clumps of 5, developing crystal like specks of white resin on the needles. This characteristic is unique to Bristlecone. The needles live 10 to 17 years giving the branches a ‘foxtail’ look, a common name for the Bristlecone pine. The krummholz effect can be simulated with gradual pruning and branch redirection if you want a long term hobby. Be careful not to overwater, once established it will need very little, if any, extra irrigation.
