Unique Features: The Vanderwolf pine is a cultivar of the Limber pine native to the western U.S. but it originated in a nursery in New Jersey and may have some Eastern White pine heritage in its genetic mix. Also most Vanderwolfs are grafted onto Eastern White pine root stock yielding a faster growth rate but a loss of some of the inherent drought tolerance of the Limber pine. It grows into a narrower conical shape. This is a 5 needle pine and that gives a bushy look to the foliage. As with other long needle pines, such as the Ponderosa and the Austrian, it will drop a healthy amount of its needles each fall. The Vanderwolf tends to develop a more see through profile in our semi-arid environment. This look can be altered by candle pruning, especially when young and/or carefully and gradually increasing the amount of water the tree receives. This pine can produces cones up to 8” long.
