Prunus x cistena ‘Schmidtcis’
Pink
Bronze, Purple
Unique Features: The Big Cis plum is a cross between the purple leafed plums and the Native Western Sand Cherry. A cousin to the shrubby Purple Leaf Sand Cherry, the Big Cis plum was selected and propagated for its dwarf tree form. It has the same purple foliage and early blooming white flowers as the Purple Leaf Sand Cherry. The flowers have dark red-purple anthers so they show more of a pink color from a distance. The Big Cis develops a thick, stout trunk at a relatively young age, becoming a small tree with a substantial presence. When the flowers escape the spring frosts, they can develop into 1” edible fruit with a sweet/astringent flavor. The Big Cis plum is durable enough to be used in xeric (water wise) plantings where it will bring extra color from its flowers in the spring and its vivid foliage in the summer.
