Unique Features: The Mount Royal plum is an heirloom fruit that originated from either a pit or a cutting of a European prune plum brought to Montreal, Canada in the late 1700’s. Both the city and the tree are named after a local peak. Its hardiness and fruit quality lead to its spread across the continent. In the spring the tree has fragrant white flowers that mature into small to medium round, freestone plums with sweet juicy yellow green flesh. The fruit has a high sugar content which allows it to be dried without fermenting around the pit. This also makes it great for fresh eating, preserves and baking. To make things easier the Mt. Royal plum is self-fertile, procuring heavy yields with a single tree. It is resistant to black knot fungal disease, and naturally grows in an open spreading manner that minimizes pruning. Caution: the fruit and foliage are toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
