Prunus americana x P. salicina ‘Superior’
White
Yellow, Orange
Unique Features: The Superior plum is a natural cross between the Japanese and American plums. It will need a pollinator and any Japanese, American or hybrid thereof will work, such as the Toka or the Santa Rosa. As with most plums, the Superior blooms with fragrant white flowers in early spring so late frosts may interfere with fruit production. The good sized, 2’’ to 2 ½’’ plums have red skin which darkens with purple shades as it ripens in later July into August. The sweet yellow flesh is firm, meaty and travels well. It is great for fresh eating, preserves and freezing (which make it even sweeter). The Superior will need regular pruning because the fruit is produced on new, younger wood. Netting the tree will protect the fruits of your labor from the birds and squirrels, but won’t help with bears.
