Prunus salicina ‘Toka’

Unique Features: The Toka plum originated in South Dakota in 1911, which helps explain its extreme cold hardiness. The Toka plum is a hybrid of the American and Japanese plums. This means it can pollinate Japanese plums, hybrid plums and provide a production boost to the self-fertile American plums. The white spring flowers are fragrant, abundant and loaded with pollen which adds to its efficacy as a pollinator. On its own, the Toka plum is self-fertile and will produce abundant 1.7’’ clingstone plums with red bronze skin and apricot colored flesh. The plums are very sweet and have both an aroma and taste that is reminiscent of bubblegum. The skin of these plums has a tart taste which works to offset and compliment the candy-like sweetness of the flesh. The fruit will ripen off the tree and holds its flavor from the early ripe firm stage through to the later soft ripe stage.
