Unique Features: The Heritage raspberry is one of the better-known varieties of raspberry. Heritage is a perennial plant, but the individual canes live no longer than 2 years. During the 1st year the primo canes grow to full height, flower, and produce berries on the upper ½ of the cane starting in late summer and continuing until the first frost. During the 2nd year the same canes, now called flora canes, flower earlier, and produce fruit on the lower ½ of the cane in early summer; then the cane dies and can be pruned away. During this time, the new primo canes are growing up from ground level to provide the late summer/fall crop and the following year’s early summer crop. This is why they are referred to as ever bearing.
