Unique Features: The Eastern Redbud, a North American native tree, grows moderately and is grown as both a single trunk and multi stem/trunk form. It blooms in early spring with magenta-pink, sweet pea like flowers that sometimes emerge directly from the major branches and trunk. In the summer small, 3” by ½” edible seed pods can develop and hang onto the tree into and through the winter. The large, 3” to 5”, heart shaped leaves emerge with a reddish color and mature to a dark green. The Eastern Redbud is challenging to grow in our area. Because of its early bloom time, the buds overwinter on the branches and can be damaged by the combination cold, wind, low humidity, and intense sunlight in our area. With the proper siting (an eastern exposure), protection from winter winds, and a fortunate spring the bloom display can be outstanding and worth the effort.
