Cercis canadensis ‘NC2016-2’
Pink
Yellow, Red, Orange
Unique Features: This outstanding newer variety comes from North Carolina State University and has garnered multiple awards. Luckily, the dark pink, pea-like flowers bloom before the foliage emerges, otherwise they would not be noticed. The leaves emerge burgundy-red, fade to yellow, then mature to green until fall brings back the yellow. During the growing season all the colors and transitional shades are present on the same branch. Using an encapsulated slow-release fertilizer will help extend the growing season. This Redbud is challenging to grow in our area. Because of its early bloom time, the buds overwinter on the branches and can be damaged by the combination of cold, wind, low humidity, and intense sunlight. With the proper siting (an eastern exposure), protection from winter winds, and a fortunate spring the bloom display can be outstanding.
