Cercis canadensis 'Ruby Falls'

Unique Features: The Ruby Falls grows moderately into a very compact small tree/shrub with a weeping form. It blooms in early spring, with magenta pink, pea-like flowers that sometimes emerge directly from the major branches and trunk. In the summer, small 3” by ½” edible seed pods can develop and hang onto the tree into and through the winter. The large, 3” to 5” heart-shaped leaves emerge with a reddish-purple color and mature to a mostly purple color with some green splashes. The Eastern Redbud is challenging to grow in our area. Because of its early bloom time, the buds overwinter on the branches and can be damaged by the combination of cold, wind, low humidity, and intense sunlight during the winter. With the proper siting (an eastern exposure), protection from winter winds, and a fortunate spring the bloom display can be outstanding and worth the effort.
