Unique Features: Serviceberry trees and shrubs are native to nearly all North America, including Canada, the continental U.S. and into Mexico. They are similar to a blueberry, and can be used in all the same ways, but they’re much easier to grow in our area. The Regent serviceberry is a slowly spreading form with abundant fruit that is ¼’’ to ½’’ in size, very sweet, and best picked when it changes from red to dark purple. Serviceberries are self-fertile so there is fruit with just one plant, but you will have to fight for it. Birds love them, as do mammals ranging from mice to bears. However, they are toxic to dogs and the deer tend to leave them alone. If you plant multiple plants, then each one will have more fruit and if you mix the varieties of serviceberries then there will be even more fruit to share. These plants are a great and easy way to get started with fruit growing.
