Unique Features: The Seven Son Flower, a member of the Honeysuckle family, is native to China and can be considered a large shrub or a small tree. It grows rapidly and can be trained into a single trunked tree form. The first thing noticeable about the plant is the light tan bark that exfoliates, or peels off, in strips or even sheets. The narrow, glossy dark green leaves form in May. The Seven Son Flower doesn’t bloom until late summer. The small cream-colored flowers have the appearance of Jasmine flowers, with a sweet fragrance, and can last several weeks. After the flowers finish the bases of the flowers put on a show (see above ‘Fall Color’). There are actually only 6 flowers in each cluster, the center bud of the cluster is a bud for a new stem that grows to support another cluster of 6 flowers, and so on.
