Picea pungens glauca 'Blue Totem'
Unique Features: The Blue Totem is a variety of the columnar form of Colorado spruce. The Blue Totem was selected for commercial propagation because of its extremely narrow growth habit which means you can have a blue spruce in a small space. The columnar types of evergreens, especially when younger, are susceptible to splaying open from snow load. It is advisable to bind or wrap younger trees during the snow months. This can be done with cord or an open mesh plastic (sold as deer fencing). These methods allow for light penetration and air circulation when it isn’t snowing. Air circulation is important because soon after a snow storm the temperatures can raise well above 40 degrees accompanied with intense sunlight which would make solid wrappings more problematic. Regular tip pruning can also help with this issue.
