Unique Features: The Colorado Blue spruce in our state tree (shared with Utah) and it has many variations (mutations). The variations that have marketable potential are propagated for horticultural use. Many naturally growing Colorado Blue spruces are quite green, it is similar to blue eyed and brown eyed people, genetics. All Colorado Blue spruces will have lighter colored new foliage that usually darkens with time. The blue color comes from a waxy coating covering the needles and the durability of that coating determines how long the needles stay blue. Some pesticides, especially horticultural oil and insecticidal soaps, can wash off the coating turning the blue to green. The Colorado Blue spruce is a large impressive horticultural tree that needs room to thrive. If you don’t have the room then there are many slower growing cultivars that will take more time to eat your house.
