Unique Features: The Hoopsi spruce, yet another cultivated variety of Colorado spruce, originated from a seedling grown at the Hoops nursery in Germany in the mid 1950’s. Since that time it has been considered “the bluest of the blue”. The Hoopsi grows intermediately into a large tree with a slightly narrower conical form with around a 3:1 aspect ratio. The Hoopsi naturally has a straight leader but a more open and somewhat erratic branching habit. Those features along with longer needles than most other varieties of Colorado spruces gives these trees a distinctive character over time. Regular tip pruning (and a little beyond that) can yield a smoother appearance at the expense of having ‘character’.
