Unique Features: The Tulip tree is one of the largest trees in the Magnolia family. It is an eastern hardwood tree that grows rapidly to a large size. The wood is somewhat brittle, and this, combined with a fast growth rate, necessitates regular pruning. Being an eastern native, it prefers soil pH < 6.5 so a soil test of the planting site would be in order. If the soil pH is high, it can be lowered by applying natural soil sulfur (or chemical compounds such as aluminum sulfate) and/or mulching with acidic additives such as pine needles, oak leaves, or cotton boll compost. The flowers bloom in May/June and are tulip shaped with yellow green petals that have a zig-zag orange base. The flowers are on the upper part of the tree, so they may be hidden eventually, but the leaves resemble a tulip flower in profile. This is a good choice for a large, fast growing shade tree with the extra benefit of flowers.
