I love houseplants! Simple as that. The houseplant trend has been around for decades. You might remember your mother or grandmother having terrariums in their homes. They understood the importance and joy that these living organisms freely give. And now the trend is back in full force. I would like to take a deep dive into all of the reasons that I love houseplants; hoping it will resonate with and inspire you.

First and foremost, all plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, even house plants. And who doesn’t love having a little extra oxygen in their home? Through this process, these plants can eliminate harmful toxins in the air. A NASA study reports that houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins in just 24 hours.

Second, some studies report that houseplants can reduce stress levels. Taking care of a plant gives us a sense of purpose. This sense of purpose can even aid with feelings of loneliness and depression. Simply being with nature, whether indoors or outdoors, has mood boosting qualities. Which is needed, if you have been working from home during this crazy time in the world!

Third, houseplants are aesthetically pleasing. They are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to decorate an apartment, business, home, or office. There are not just “green” houseplants these days. The selection that is available now has increased exponentially. You can get plants with variegated, neon yellow, tri-color, and even hints of orange and pink leaves. All while giving you endless practical benefits.

We carry a lot of houseplants here at Pine Lane Nursery.  Here are some tips to consider when you are choosing plants for your home:

Research the types of plants that you are interested in. You want to know what kind of light, the amount of water needed, and the toxicity of the plant (if you have pets) so you are setting yourself up for success. If you have any questions about houseplants, please feel free to contact me.
